Adoption Policy

The Blue Mountain Humane Association is a non-profit humane organization committed to the welfare of all animals in our care, and thus considers pet ownership a serious responsibility.

In order to adopt an animal from the shelter, you must:

  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Have identification showing proof of name and age
  • Be able and willing to spend the time and money necessary to provide training, medical treatment, and proper care for a pet you are considering to adopt.

Our Adoption Fees

  • Most dogs at The Animal Shelter cost $108;  if you are seeking a specific breed, they may be more expensive, anywhere from $125 to $225; this includes the adoption fee, their spay or neuter, a microchip, and if appropriate a Union County dog license.
  • Our Distinguished Dogs are seniors as they are harder to place because of age, medical conditions and/or behavior restrictions. Their adoption fee is $67.00.
  • Spayed and neutered cats and kittens cost $22. For cats between the ages of 1-6, we will include a free microchip.
  • Senior cats (over 6 years) are $12.00.
  • All unaltered cats and kittens are $52 for males and $74 for females.

Health and Other Requirements

When you adopt your animal from the Animal Shelter, we will make an appointment at the veterinarian of your choice for the spay/neuter if needed; Animal Shelter staff will take your pet for the appointment (along with a voucher for the amount of the spay/neuter only) and you will pick your pet up from the vet.

The animals available for adoption have come from a variety of sources. Adoption guarantee: all of these animals have been examined upon entry, and their health is routinely monitored while at the shelter; but there is always a chance that an animal is incubating a disease without showing any clinical signs; therefore, you receive a complementary examination by any of the Veterinary clinics in La Grande to insure that your new pet is healthy. If you have to return a new adoptee, for any reason, we can only refund the cost of the adoption, minus the cost of the spay/neuter, microchip and licnese, within the first two weeks.

In order to assist you in finding that special pet which meets your lifestyle as well as being in the animal’s best interest, you will need to provide some information to an adoption counselor who will assist you in completing the adoption process. This information includes such information as your reason for the adoption, your ability to care for your new pet, type of residence where the pet will reside, numbers and age of residence members, known allergies of persons of the residence, your experience with pet ownership, knowledge of species behavior, and local laws regarding pet ownership. The Animal Shelter Staff reserves the right to refuse adoption to anyone for any reason. No animals will be adopted to persons having an extensive history of losing, giving away, selling, or having animals injured or killed by moving vehicles. In some cases a premise inspection by an Animal Control Officer or Humane Society representative may be necessary before the adoption process can be completed.
